The Craft & the Organization
Jute fiber is naturally derived from plants, which is a non-toxic and eco-friendly and recyclable material. It is also called golden fiber because of its special golden luster. It is the second most important vegetable fiber after cotton in terms of use, global consumption, production and availability. The goods made from jute over the centuries have a wide range of products ranging from sacks, bags, ropes to folders, door mates, wall hangings, various types of swings, bottle covers, dolls, pen holders.
History-
Jute has been in use since time immemorial, the exact time has not been determined. Jute craft in India is associated with a rich past. Jute was used for utilitarian use around the world to make household and agricultural equipment such as rope hand cloths, wall hangings, etc., before being transformed into a commodity used for commercial exploration. Jute craft has developed in India focusing on eastern India. The maximum production of jute was generally done in Bengal in the Middle Ages, from where it also began to be exported globally in the 18th century. In 1793 AD the East India Company exported the first consignment of jute from India. By 1939, Bengal had become a major pillar of jute production with 68377 looms.
Ghazipur Jute Wall Hanging-
About 60 villages in Ghazipur district, located on the west bank of the river Ganges, about 80 km northeast of Varanasi, produce one of India’s own GI (I) decorative items, popularly known as golden fiber wall hangings. goes. Making wall hangings from jute fibers is a handiwork of craftsmen and is a legacy passed down from generation to generation. No single hazardous material or process is used when producing the artwork. The designs are drawn from daily life including villages, flora and fauna, deities and natural landscapes.
PREPARATION OF JUTE PRODUCT
Manufacturing Process-
Natural-colored raw jute is carefully bleached to produce soft, white, and colorless yarn. Using traditional dyeing methods, the yarn is then transformed into vibrant shades, ready for weaving. The weaving process is carried out using a 5-foot pit-loom, a time-honored technique passed down through generations. After weaving, artisans skillfully trim excess threads and smooth the surface, ensuring a clean, finished base. The final stage of this intricate craft involves embellishing the jute fabric with art silk, colored yarn, velvet paper, and decorative beads, resulting in stunning wall hangings and jute-based artwork. Each piece is uniquely designed based on current global market trends and customer preferences. To promote sustainable livelihoods and preserve traditional craftsmanship, the Office of Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Ministry of Textiles, Government of India has launched the Ambedkar Handicrafts Development Scheme (Adopted Cluster) in Paharpur, Ghazipur. This initiative is currently being implemented by Sahbhagi Handicraft Producer Company Limited, with the aim of making jute artisans socially, educationally, and financially self-reliant, while nurturing heritage skills and creating greater market access for rural artisans.
